How it works

About caloriesburned.app

A free, no-sign-up calculator for the calories you burn moving. Here is how the numbers are worked out, where the values come from and what they can and can’t tell you.

What the site is

caloriesburned.app is a free calculator that estimates the calories you burn during everyday activities and workouts. It covers 26 activities, from walking, running, cycling and swimming to strength training, yoga, gardening and house cleaning. Enter your weight in kg or lb and the time, and you get an estimate in seconds. There is no sign-up, and nothing you type is sent to us.

How the estimate works

Each activity has a MET value (metabolic equivalent). A MET compares the energy cost of an activity with sitting quietly at rest, which is 1 MET. The calculator combines it with your weight and time:

Estimated kcal = MET × 3.5 × weight in kg × minutes ÷ 200

The result is the total energy used during the activity, including the energy your body would use at rest anyway. Alongside it we show an illustrative range of ±12% as a reminder that this is an estimate, not a measured confidence interval.

Example: a 75 kg person walking briskly (4.8 MET) for 30 minutes: 4.8 × 3.5 × 75 × 30 ÷ 200 ≈ 189 kcal, shown with a range of 166–212 kcal.

Want to do the math yourself? See how to calculate calories burned, a step-by-step guide with worked examples.

Where the MET values come from

Our MET values come from the 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities, the standard reference list of energy costs for human activities:

Herrmann SD, Willis EA, Ainsworth BE, et al. 2024 Adult Compendium of Physical Activities: A third update of the energy costs of human activities. Journal of Sport and Health Science. 2024;13(1):6–12. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jshs.2023.10.010

Compendium website: pacompendium.com/adult-compendium

Each of the 26 activities in the calculator is matched to the closest Compendium activity below and uses that entry’s MET value. We aligned the last 11 values with the 2024 entries on October 8, 2026, so the calculator, the charts and the guides use the same numbers.

Limits

MET values are averages for groups of people. Your real energy use varies with fitness, body composition, technique, terrain, heat and how hard you actually work. Smartwatches and formulas like this one are both estimates, so treat any single number as a guide and use the same tool consistently.

Not medical advice

Estimates are for general information only and are not a medical measurement or advice. If you have a health condition, are pregnant, or are planning a big change in diet or exercise, talk to a doctor or qualified professional.
